The Dallas Ft. Worth Summer Balloon Classic is scheduled to lift off June 20-22 at Mid-Way Regional Airport in Waxahachie. The aviation extravaganza will feature colorful hot air balloons that will take to the skies at dawn and again in the afternoons. Mass ascensions will be followed by more balloons, featuring top-ranked competitors flying challenging tasks.
Saturday evening, just as the sun goes down, visitors will experience the unique "Lite up the Nite" balloon glow, as the inflated balloons stand glowing like huge orbs.
The Energizer Bunny "Hot Hare" balloon will make an appearance and is always a popular attraction. Standing 15 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, the bunny's ears are 8 stories high, equivalent to the size of the heads on Mt. Rushmore. The Mayflower balloon will also make its only north Texas appearance.
During the day, guests will be entertained by the Aviation Extravaganza will entertain guests. Gliders and helicopters will be featured, as well as a variety of civilian and military aircraft, skydivers and more, in static displays, demonstrations and flyovers. Some flights will be available to the public.
NASA will feature large interactive exhibit, to celebrate the 50th year of the space program.
Concession stands will offer food, arts and crafts, exhibits and displays. This family event will have exhibits for guests of all ages. Organizers hope to introduce children to the vast world of aviation.
The event is sponsored in part by Curves International, RE/MAX of Texas and the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. Both Curves and RE/MAX are committed to hot air ballooning and corporate balloon teams. Re/MAX International has 150 balloons, the largest corporate balloon fleet in the world.
