The ultimate compliment for a writer is when people read what you write. It helps if they like it too!
Recently, my high school class held its 30th reunion. (It's definitely a jolt, by the way, when you find out you're at that landmark.) To prepare for it, we each wrote a short biography for the reunion website.
When I got to the reunion, one of the first former classmates I saw was a woman who had served as the editor on our high school paper. When I enthusiastically gushed that I was an editor, she said she had read my bio. She also said I proved our teacher wrong, because she had told us it was difficult to land a writing/editing job! It was fun getting back to my "roots" and talking to someone who shared an early passion for writing.
A little while later, someone from my class I didn't recognize immediately came up and introduced himself. He traveled farthest for the reunion; he flew in from Memphis. He said he had read my bio and then visited Airport Journals' website, and wanted to know how to subscribe. He's always been interested in aviation, and his son is taking flying lessons. While on the website, he read some of the articles I had written. I was thrilled to find out that immediately after reading the article on Tony Bill and "Flyboys," he'd gone to the movies to see it, and loved it. That's what I like to hear!
I was busy working on this issue, so I couldn't go to see the film when it opened on Sept. 22. I was surprised when my sister called me the next day after the reunion and said that because of my enthusiasm for the project, she had also gone to see "Flyboys." Although she's not a pilot, and has never delved deeply into World War I aviation, she liked the plotline so much that she was disappointed when the movie ended. I didn't want anyone else to see it before me, so I took time out to go see it with my husband the next day. We both loved it, and I felt a sense of pride that my writing about it in advance encouraged others to see a truly wonderful film as well.
Now, back to this issue. I believe we again have something for everybody. I hope you enjoy my interview with Steve Fossett, who has lived a truly fascinating life. That article begins on page 8-B. For race fans, our Reno coverage begins on page 18-C.
